When people show you who they are, believe them. That is a popular phrase that applies to everyone including our President. Once again, Donald Trump has put on a full display of his brash and divisive nature for the world to see. His latest antics only further shows who he really is, an out of control racist and bigot who is slowly tearing this country apart.
While speaking a rally in Alabama the President decided to weigh in on Colin Kaepernick, the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback who has divided many Americans with his national anthem protest against racial inequality in America during the NFL season last year. During his speech Trump took a direct shot at Kaepernick when he said that everyone in the room were united by the same “American values” and that “we respect our flag.” He then proceeded to ask the crowd when someone disrespects the flag would they not like to see an NFL owner say,“ get that son of a b**ch off the field right now, out…he’s fired.”
President Trump for many years has denied being racist but a speech like this shows his true feelings. The fact that he would allow these words to leave his mouth is saddening but not at all surprising. Only after much public criticism from the media and politicians for blaming “both sides” for the Charlottesville fiasco that resulted in the death of a woman, did Trump finally decided to condemn the Neo-Nazis and white supremacists responsibly for the violence.
In the case of Colin Kaepernick and other NFL athletes who have decided to use their platforms to voice their displeasure with racial injustice they have not killed or brought harm to anyone. These players are promoting peace and equality for all while Neo-Nazis and white supremacists promote violence and anger towards all those who are different from them.
Trump talks about “American values” but fails to mention that not all Americans have those rights. America is a land of liberty where every man and woman should be treated equally despite their race, color, etc. He says that they are disrespectful to the flag but is it not disrespectful the way Neo-Nazis and white supremacists view minorities? Is it not disrespectful to insult those who are speaking for those who do not have a voice and are looking for fairness in the land of the free? Protesting the flag is not un American, denying the rights to some that are afforded to others is un American.
It is shameful that Trump would go up on stage and promote such hateful and divisive rhetoric. It is people like this why civil rights activists from Frederick Douglass to Martin Luther King Jr. to Colin Kaepernick have been necessary in this country. People that spew this kind of hatred is why the NAACP and Black Lives Matter movement were formed in the first place.
The President can claim to not be racist all he wants but words like these say otherwise. Trump won the Presidency off spreading hate and dividing others, so much so that he has even gotten verbal support from former and current KKK members. There is more than enough evidence to prove that he is a racist and a bigot and he is the one not living up to our “American values.”
