The Republican Party wants the poor to work for their government benefits.

It’s a dream come true for the Republicans now that they have control over both the White House and congress. The prime directive for the Republican Party is requiring as many adults of lower socioeconomic status as possible to earn back their benefit checks. The idea behind it will make more American citizens get jobs to put them on the path to self-sufficiency. It will also reduce the number of people who depend on public assistance.

According to the White House budget Director, Mike Mulvaney “There’s a dignity to work, and there’s a necessity to work to help the country succeed,” he says “We are no longer going to measure compassion by the number of programs or the number of people on those programs, we’re going to measure compassion and success in the number of people  we help get off those programs and get back in charge of their lives.” The food stamp program contains an employment requirement, but it usually is waived, the Republican Party is trying to change that factor completely. The Republicans want the recipients of government assistance to satisfy the work requirement. These requirements include looking for work, attend job training, and participating in community service programs.

In my opinion, I feel like this new plan the Republicans are trying to pass that will make the low and middle- class work more towards their government benefits is bullshit and unnecessary  . The reason I strongly feel that way is because if you are poor and already struggling you shouldn’t have to go through a series of processes to be eligible for a service you should get under lesser conditions. I’m not arguing that people shouldn’t at least try to work or earn their government benefits, but a lot of poor Americans are already working or at least trying to look for a job already. The poor Americans rely on easily acquiring these government benefits  like food stamp, welfare, Medicaid   and financial aid to help their family expenses because cost of living has drastically gone up over the years . The Republican Party putting in this ruling doesn’t take into account the health, child care and transportation costs added on for the lower class citizens.

President Trump’s budget proposal suggested a 40% cut of job training programs, but isn’t this a contradiction? If employees aren’t being trained properly or aren’t having the proper funding for efficient training programs  it can cause a downward spiral with jobs . The Republicans in Congress are also on board to repeal and replace Obama care which will allow states to impose work requirements on non-disabled, non-elderly and not pregnant adults basically a majority of our country’s population. I feel like the American citizens should be able to easily obtain government benefits and not worry about having to go through a whole job requirement process because it’s not always easy for everyone to get a job. There are certain factors that prevent a lot of people from easily getting a job such as lack of experience, criminal background, disability and citizenship. The Republicans attempt to make low class citizens go through a work requirement process will only slow down the economy and make America worse instead of great.
